LOS DESECHOS
8.30 8PM
Los Desechos doesn’t just play Cumbias—they raise the dead with "Cumbias Levantamuertos." Their music is for everyone: the tía and tío who know all the dance moves, los vecinos (the neighbors), the car cruising down East Austin bumping them, for you, and for everyone. They’re not just a band—they’re part of the cultural fabric of the community.
Los Desechos has shared the stage with Sonora Dinamita, Sonido Gallo Negro, El Combo Oscuro, Money Chicha, and more at SXSW, Viva Big Bend, Houston’s Cumbia Caravan, San Antonio’s Noche Cumbiambera and is the resident house band for Hotel Vegas Cumbia Night.
Comprised of John Dell on guitar (El Combo Oscuro/El Tule/En Orbito/Harvest Band), David Dalton on keys (Continental Drift), Jacob Rivera on bass (El Tule/Beat Eternal), Eric Brown on drums (Los Kurados), Mateo Turner (El Tule) and Michael Penic on timbales (El Tule), Los Desechos—loosely meaning "The Outsiders"—formed in early 2024 with a clear mission: to blow up local dance-floors with feel-good original Cumbias that resonate with the soul, and make the body feel alive.
Their music is heavily influenced by the psychedelic, chicha, sonidero, and surf sounds, creating a unique mezcla that has already made waves in Austin's vibrant music scene and has quickly become a favorite among Austin’s thriving dance community.
“Our goal is to bring back the kind of Cumbias you heard on 70s radio as you approached the Laredo bridge or you hear while driving in West Texas along the border—the ones your neighbor who likes to party plays ‘till 3 AM. Downtown Monterrey, MX cantinas still come alive with the sound of juke box Cumbias. Those are the types of Cumbias we’re reviving".
