Jason Scott and The High Heat + AV and the viscounts

  • CMW BREWERY 4824 East Cesar Chavez Street Austin, TX, 78702 United States (map)

Too loud for folk music and too textured for Red Dirt, this is the sound of a genuine band rooted in groove, grit, and its own singular spirit, led by a songwriter whose unique past — a Pentecostal upbringing, years logged as a preacher-in-training, and an eventual crisis of faith — has instilled both a storyteller's delivery and an unique perspective about life, love, and listlessness in the modern world. Their first full length album Castle Rock, independently released in Feb 2022, spent two months in the top 50 reaching all the way to #36 with the help of Angela Backstrom and Rek Room Media.

JS+THH is Jason Scott (guitar, vocals), Gabriel Mor (guitar), Taylor Johnson (guitar, keys), Alberto Roubert (drums), Ryan Magnani (bass), and Garrison Brown (keys)

It all started with a birthday show in 2018, thought to have been a one off tribute offering to the late Gram Parsons. Local honky tonk aficionado and touring drummer of many genres, Adrian “AV” Voorhies, built a band for the occasion drawing deep from the well of country music talent in his native Austin, Texas, community. The show was a raucous success and a rotating cast of players quickly evolved into a tight quartet whose mission has remained the same since - bringing high energy and sincere takes on honky tonk music from Texas and beyond to wooden dance floors across the state.

With roots deeply planted in the central Texas hill country, AV & his Viscounts (a regal name for a regal band) are a stalwart of the rich tradition of Texas music. The Viscounts boast a repertoire consisting of material dating back as far as the early 20th century and pushing through every decade since up until the 1980's and 90's. Honky Tonk, Classic Country, Cosmic Country, Wester Swing, traditional American Jazz, Americana, and Folk are among the styles the Viscounts bring to the honky tonks, dance halls, and dive bars where two-steppers and cowboys come to scoot their boots. After several collaborative events with East Austin party stalwart Latchkey, AV and his band of country crooners began a 2 year weekly residency at the club, tightening the wheels of the outfit and daring the sometimes unfamiliar crowd to get up and revel in singing steel guitar and telecaster riffs. That primed the Viscounts to take on any atmosphere

with a plethora of country adjacent music in the hat, be it tear in your beer or wild dance party. From Bob Wills and Buck Owens to Ray Price, Graham Parsons, Emmy Lou Harris, Emest Tubb, Keith Whitley, and George Strait, the distinctive and eclectic song selection the band has composed is as unique as it is timeless. Fronted by the aforementioned AV (Adrian Voorhies, drums & vocals) sharing singing duties with Casey Kuznieski (guitar & vocals) with the one and only Tony Rincon (pedal steel & guitar), and Barrett O'Donnell (bass & vocals) the Viscounts are about as tight and heavy-hitting of a honky-tonk 4-piece as you'll ever come across. The Viscounts laid down their first EP at the end of 2023 at Hungry Dog Sound Studio in Austin, a live tracked and whimsical affair, incorporating a diverse selection of tunes.

Brandishing classic harmonies, crafted solos, beautifully dynamic ballads, and good old fashioned fun and personality the Viscounts bring a party for everyone who can appreciate real good music wherever they hang their collective hat.
